This post explains how to insert images into forum postings.

Updated April 2011 for new editors

IMPORTANT: Image size is limited to 2048 pixels high or wide, and maximum file size is 2MB.  If you are having trouble uploading please check the size of your image.

Please ensure that the image is allowed to be shown on the website, either by being an image produced by you, or by the copyright or image license allowing the use of the image.  You as the uploader / inserter of the image will be liable for any copyright infringments.

1. When editing a topic or comment, click on the insert image button in the toolbar.

The Image Properties form appears.

2. You now need to decide if you are going to show the image in your posting as it is, or if you want to display a smaller version that people can click on to see the full-size version.

a) If you just want to see the image, choose the "Image Info" tab.

b) If you want to have the image as a link, choose the "Link" tab.

3. If the image is already somewhere else on the internet you can enter the address (eg http://www.example.com/image.jpg) directly into the URL field on the form and click OK.  That will display the image on the page and you are done. (Hint: In Firefox and other browsers you can right-click on an image and select "Copy Link Location")

4. If the image is not already on the internet click the "Browse Server" button on the form.  That will bring up the Image Browser form:

5. You can either select an image that is already on the NZ120.ORG server, or you can upload a new image from your computer.

To upload a new image click on the "Upload" button in the top-left corner (it may take a little while to appear) and navigate to the image on your computer, then click OK when selected.  That will insert the path to the image in the field next to the Browse button.

In order to keep the site manageable and prevent long download times when viewing a post the size of images is limited, so if it is a large image then you will need to reduce it's size.  The options for doing this will depend on your operating system and the software you have available.  There is also a per-user maximum size for all images.  If you reach your limit let us know.  If you store the image somewhere else on the internet these limitations don't apply.  Images have to be less than 2048 pixels high or wide, and less than 1MB file size.

Select if you want the server to automatically create smaller images from your original file. The "Thumbnail" option will create a small thumbnail copy (100 pixels) of your image.  This is a good option for Links to images.  The "Preview" option will create a copy of your image resized to 640x480 pixels, and this is a good option for most posts, such as in the forum.

When you have done that, click the "Upload" button.  That will begin sending the image from your computer to the NZ120 server.

6.  When the upload is complete you should see a confirmation message, and the image will appear in the Image Browser form and will be selected by default.

7.  Once you have an image selected (a preview will be visibile in the bottom of the Image Browser), click on the "Insert File" button to insert it into your post.  That will bring up the following form.  (If you want to insert the same image into another post you don't need to upload it again, just select it in the Image Browser).

8. The properties of your image are displayed and you can adjust the size and alignment.  Click "OK" when you are done and your image should appear in your post.

9. Once your image is in your post you can right-click and select "Image Properties" to change some of the options.

10. If you image is visible when editing, but it doesn't appear when posted you will need to edit the post, and select the "Input Format" option below the main body field.  Select the "Full HTML" option and save.  Your images should then appear.
